Inspiration
Dr Catherine Hamlin (1924-2020) was an inspirational, visionary female doctor who spent her life pursuing a quest to treat and prevent traumatic birth complications in Ethiopia.
Due to a desperate lack of maternal care, young women suffered prolonged labours lasting days, frequently resulting in stillbirth and causing fistulae into the rectum or bladder. The affected women were ostracized by their communities due to uncontrollable leakage of faeces or urine.
During her lifetime Catherine treated around 35,000 women with obstetric fistulae, giving them dignity and hope. She opened the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital in 1974, which is now a global centre of expertise, where obstetric surgeons from around the world come to train. Each patient receives counselling, physiotherapy, access to numeracy and literacy programs, and leaves with a new dress, made by the hospital’s seamstresses.
Catherine also established the Hamlin College of Midwives in pursuit of her goal to have a midwife in every village. The Catherine Hamlin Foundation continues to restore the health and dignity of women who have suffered birth injury.

Oh my gosh – just received my beautiful Catherine bag and am totally blown away by the quality. I had been using a hold-all and laptop bag previously which was cumbersome and unattractive, but now everything has its place in this beautiful bag (and my hallway, where I leave my bags, looks so much better too!) . The layout is so clever with versatile pockets that accommodate everything I need, and it opens flat so everything is easy to find. If I were to list everything I have put in it, the list would be very long, and yet it all looks so neat and tidy and not overfilled at all. Very impressive. Very excited to show it off at work!

I absolutely love this bag. I have browsed various medical bags before choosing this one, and I was drawn to the fact that iIyasu bags are all vegan and made from recycled materials with a focus on sustainability and ethical manufacture. I chose the Catherine bag in particular due to the fact that it fully opens and folds out flat, making it easy to see and get to your things with no blind rummaging around like my previous bags. It has surpassed my expectations and I absolutely love it – it is well made, sturdy, looks stylish and sophisticated and has lots of thoughtful design features and pockets making it an ideal choice for a work bag. Wow such a beautiful bag! So stylish in a beautiful mulberry colour, yet practical and useful for day to day life as a GP.
Well designed with numerous spacious pockets to hold equipment, medications, blood tubes, essential paperwork etc.
Easy to unzip and open to access all compartments. Padlock/key/name-tag all attached.
When zipped up it’s easy to swing over shoulder and carry about.
I’ve had so many compliments from colleagues and patients !

I have just received my Catherine bag and it is gorgeous – I was so excited opening all the layers of packing and when it was finally done – I was elated to see such a beautiful and well made bag. The colour is gorgeous. The bag is so well made inside and out, where attention to detail has been given in all aspects. I am not a Doctor but bought this for work as I usually trundle into the office with a number of bags to accommodate all my stuff from working at home …. back into the office and visa versa. I would definitely use this bags when I attend meeting or seminars / conferences as it is a bit like Mary Poppins’ bag – room for everything and lots of pockets to the contents (pens, laptop, books, charging cables, mobile wifi, phone, purse etc). Please put your bags on the market for general work or traveling use – they are far too good to be reserved for use by Doctors (although female Doctors do deserve this much elegance in their daily lives) and so the world should be able to experience this level of luxury at an affordable price. Well done for your idea, perfection, style and making luxury so accessible.
