Inspiration
Dr Patricia Bath (1942-2019) was an ophthalmologist whose lifetime work restored or improved the vision of millions of patients worldwide. Patricia founded the discipline of Community Ophthalmology, co-founded the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness, and invented the “Laserphaco Probe” to treat cataracts.
Patricia noticed that Black patients were twice as likely to lose their sight as White patients. She realised that this was due to lack of access to eye care. This revelation ignited her determination to reduce the divide in racial inequality in healthcare. Patricia believed that “eyesight is a basic human right” and she convinced her professors at Columbia University to start performing ophthalmological surgeries free of charge.
She later became the first African American female physician to receive a medical patent for her invention of the Laserphaco Probe. Adaptations of this device have since been used to treat cataracts and restore the sight of thousands of people who have been visually impaired or blind for decades.
Patricia faced multiple barriers due to her gender and skin colour, but overcame these with dignity and determination, leaving a legacy of global community eye care.

Absolutely delighted with my new doctors bag. The quality is fabulous and it has been so well thought out. There are plenty of pockets for keeping your equipment separate but tidy and the hidden phone zip at the front is fantastic. Best of all are the shoulder straps – normally I feel like my arm is going to fall off before I’ve even walked from the car to my room and now will no longer have this problem!

I received the Patricia bag in Mulberry as a present from my surgery as a gift for my CCT and I am absolutely delighted with it. The bag is beautifully designed, with enough pockets and space to hold everything you need, while being easily accessible. I like the practicality of it being a rucksack but still looks so smart. I thought I had an issue with a missing key (I didn’t, I just didn’t look properly), and the customer service was excellent.
