Embracing Sustainable Living

In a world where the impacts of climate change are becoming increasingly evident, the need to adopt more eco-friendly habits has never been more crucial. Living more sustainably is not just a trend; it’s a responsibility we all share. Here’s our guide to embracing sustainable living!

Our 10 Top Tips on How to be Kinder to our Planet

1

MINDFUL CONSUMPTION

A fundamental aspect of embracing sustainable living is adopting a mindset of mindful consumption. Before making a purchase, ask yourself if you truly need the item and consider its environmental impact.

This is why IYASU Medical Bags are not just practical but also long-lasting and made from sustainable materials.

2

REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE

The classic mantra holds true: Reduce your consumption, reuse items whenever possible, and recycle responsibly. Be conscious of single-use items, and invest in reusable alternatives such as water bottles, shopping bags, and containers. Proper recycling ensures that materials are diverted from landfills and given a second life.

When designing our IYASU Medical Bags, we made sure they are all made from recycled materials. This way, we are giving discarded items a second, useful life, and saving plastic bottles from entering oceans and landfills.

3

CONSERVE ENERGY

Simple changes in energy consumption habits can significantly reduce your environmental footprint – a key part of embracing sustainable living. Turn off lights and appliances when not in use, switch to energy-efficient LED bulbs, and consider installing a programmable thermostat. Additionally, harness renewable energy sources whenever possible, such as solar panels or wind power.

IYASU doesn’t just preach environmental consciousness; we practice it too. Our offices have solar panels and a battery to store excess solar power which can be used when the sun isn’t shining. (Which is essential as we’re based in Scotland!!)

4

ECO-FRIENDLY TRANSPORTATION

Consider greener alternatives for your daily commute. Opt for public transportation, carpooling, cycling, or walking. If feasible, invest in an electric or hybrid vehicle to reduce your carbon emissions. Every small change in transportation habits contributes to a more sustainable future.

The IYASU team drive electric cars and we love walking and cycling whenever we can.

WATER CONSERVATION

Conserving water is critical when embracing sustainable living. Fix leaks promptly, use water-saving appliances, and be mindful of water usage in daily activities. Collect rainwater for plants and consider installing low-flow faucets and toilets to minimize water wastage.

This is a subject close to our hearts. Sadly, we’ve just had a big leak in our building, meaning that we currently have no ceilings downstairs! Thankfully the leak is fixed but restoration may take some time.

6

GROW YOUR OWN

Cultivating your own fruits, vegetables, and herbs is not only rewarding but also promotes sustainability. It reduces your reliance on commercially produced food, supports biodiversity, and minimizes the environmental impact associated with large-scale agriculture. If space is limited, explore community gardens or container gardening.

Our founder Catherine is growing vegetables in her garden with her children every year: “We are not the most successful, but it’s fun and we keep trying. It empowers the children with life skills and encourages them to eat the veggies they have proudly grown.”

7

MINDFUL EATING

Adopting a more sustainable diet involves making mindful choices about the food you consume. Incorporate plant-based meals into your diet, support local farmers and markets, and reduce food waste by planning meals and using leftovers creatively. A sustainable diet is good for both your health and the planet.

If you can’t bring yourself to go full-on vegan, actively choosing vegetarian options more often e.g. at lunchtime, is an easier way to reduce meat consumption and ultimately your carbon footprint.

8

MINDFUL WASTE MANAGEMENT

Embrace a zero-waste lifestyle by minimizing your waste production. Composting organic matter, repurposing items, and properly recycling materials are key components of sustainable waste management. Challenge yourself to produce as little non-recyclable waste as possible.

We try to diligently recycle as much as possible as a business and as a family. Here are Catherine’s girls putting out the recycling bins.

9

EDUCATE YOURSELF AND OTHERS

Knowledge is a powerful tool for change when it comes to embracing sustainable living. Stay informed about environmental issues, sustainable practices, and innovations. Share your knowledge with others to inspire collective action. Engage in discussions about sustainability, attend workshops, and support initiatives that promote eco-friendly practices.

IYASU is always looking into greener, plant-based fabrics that can be used for future production orders. Exciting steps are being made in the engineering of vegan materials from pineapples, mushrooms, grapes and apples.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Sustainable living is not an isolated endeavor; it thrives on community engagement. Join local environmental groups, participate in clean-up events, and collaborate with neighbours on sustainable initiatives. Collective efforts create a more significant impact and foster a sense of shared responsibility.

We regularly do park and beach clean ups as a family to keep our local area beautiful.

Embracing sustainable living is a continuous journey of learning, adapting, and making mindful choices. By incorporating these practical steps into our daily lives, we contribute to a healthier planet and inspire others to follow suit.

Remember, every action, no matter how small, counts towards building a more sustainable and resilient future for generations to come.
